Similarly to figured, curly and spalted maple, Ambrosia is not a species, but a description of maple that has been infected by Ambrosia beetles.
They excavate tunnels in dead or stressed trees a release spores for the fungi in which it's co-dependent. The fungus attacks the plant tissue near the tunnels, which in-turn provides food for the beetle larvae.
This creates and interesting array of colors and designs. This log, which is currently air-drying on sticks is an exemplary design, just loaded with colors and designs.
